The sculptors will create their work on-site until February 2, 2023, using raw blocks of granite and Riyadh Stone, also known as sandstone from Saudi Arabia. This year’s public program includes a series of engaging workshops that explore sculptural forms in a variety of ways and materials, with options suitable for both beginners and intermediate levels. Faris AlHarmah’s Traditional Doors Art workshop, where participants can learn about the rich design of Saudi Arabia’s old wooden doors and carve their own inspired designs on wood, is one of the highlights. In addition, Catalyst V, an art and creativity studio, will lead a two-day series of workshops titled Foundations of Sculpting, which will teach intermediate creators how to sculpt core facial features such as the eyes, ears, nose, and lips.
Meanwhile, a series of panel discussions on contemporary sculpture and art will feature leading experts and artists working today. Topics include “Preservation of Culture Through Art,” with speakers including Saudi architect and photographer Saleh Al Hathloul, Dalya Mousa, director of arts and culture at Diriyah Gate Development Authority, and Dr Samir Al Dhamer, director of TRITA’s performance arts program.

Sculpture topics will include the history of Saudi stone, stone engraving and its history in the Kingdom, and the medium’s transition from its ancient beginnings to its current conceptual forms.
Throughout the symposium, the public program will be held in Durrat Al Riyadh and at the Riyadh Art space at JAX District. The completed artworks will be on display at Durrat Al Riyadh from February 5 to 10, 2023, following the end of the sculpting period.
