After defeating HE Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia Drago Lovric at Lusail Sports Hall, HE Ambassador of the Republic of Guyana Safraaz Ahmad was named the winner of the inaugural Ramadan Table Tennis Championship for Ambassadors.
The competition was hosted by the Qatar Table Tennis Association (QTTA), and several ambassadors accredited to the State of Qatar participated .
Three ambassadors—HE of the Republic of Croatia Drago Lovric, HE of the Republic of Peru Jose Benzaquen Perea, and HE of the Republic of Haiti Jean-Marie Francois Junior Guillaume—moved on to the semi-finals after Saturday’s 60 matches, which were played on seven tables.
Khalil bin Ahmed Al Mohannadi, president of the QTTA, expressed his pleasure with the outstanding mood that was present during the event in its inaugural year.
Al Mohannadi, who is also President of the Arab and Asian Table Tennis Unions and First Vice President of the International Table Tennis Federation, told Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the QTTA decided to organize the tournament after the ambassadors welcomed the idea to be added to the QTTA’s annual Ramadan tournaments.
Al Mohannadi praised the first edition’s involvement of 24 ambassadors, noting that everyone present at the contests saw the distinguished atmosphere present there. He expressed the hope that the tournament would be held throughout all Ramadan seasons.
Ali Sultan Al Muftah, assistant secretary of the QTTA, praised the tournament’s competitiveness and said that the QTTA had decided to hold this Ramadan tournament because of the ambassadors’ keen interest in the international and professional tournaments held in Qatar.–QNA
