Swedish National Day Celebrated in Riyadh

Under the theme “Fashion Forever”, The Embassy of Sweden held a reception on celebration of the National Day, here on Thursday.

H.E. Ambassador Petra Menander received guest of honour Assistant Undersecretary  of Riyadh Region for Rights H.E. Nabil Al-Taweel and General Director of Ceremonies and Protocol, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mohammed Al-Ghamdi, members of the diplomatic corps and dignitaries.

The National Day of Sweden falls 0n June 6th when the first king of Sweden Gustav I Vasa  was elected in 1523. On the same date in 1809, the Swedish Parliament adopted the constitution  that laid the ground work for the Kingdom of Sweden until the present day.

In her welcome speech Ambassador Petra Menander spoke about the ‘Fashion Forever’, the theme of this year‘s celebration a journey from heritage to modernity with innovation and sustainability for the future, presenting Sweden through the lens of fashion and design.

Ambassador Menander added that “Fashion Forever” theme can connect Sweden and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As people have always been keen on fashion in all times and societies, despite the differences in style and form the concept of fashion always remains part of the cultural heritage.

Ambassador Menander attire was a traditional hand-made costume from the southern region of Sweden.

“Fashion Forever” was mirrored on the eccentric celebration cake that had both designs of Swedish traditional attire with its floral yellow and blue colours and the Najdi region dress in green which represents the colour of the flag of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and embroidery of traditional patterns in golden design.

The event marked the strong diplomatic ties between Sweden and Saudi Arabia and provided an opportunity for cultural exchange, fostering connections between Swedes residing in Riyadh and members of the Saudi community.

It is noteworthy that trade exchange volume between SaudiArabia and Sweden amounted to 5.8 million riyals in 2021, recording an increase of 21% over the year 2020. Sweden ranks 62nd in Kingdom exports’ countries and 24th in the countries from which Saudi Arabia imports.
