Japan will chair the G-7 climate, decarbonization, and energy stability talks

 Riyadh – Asdaf News:

As G-7 president, Japan intends to facilitate conversations between the Group of Seven environment, energy, and climate ministers with the goal of advancing decarbonization and ensuring the stability of the energy supply in the midst of the Ukrainian crisis, according to Jiji Press on Sunday.

However, the request for Japan to specify the date by which it will stop producing coal-fired electricity may make it difficult for the two countries to agree on an unified statement. The G-7 ministers will convene in the northern city of Sapporo, Hokkaido, beginning on April 15 for a two-day meeting.

Due to Japan’s objection, the G-7 major countries this year abandoned plans to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2030.

Japan intends to keep advocating for a phaseout without a timeframe while showcasing its prowess in technology to lower carbon dioxide emissions by combining ammonia and hydrogen, two substances that burn without emitting CO2, into fuels for thermal power generation.

According to a recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by 60 percent from the 2019 levels by 2030 in order to reach the goal of limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius from the level before the Industrial Revolution. The G-7 ministers will also discuss how to achieve this goal.
