Dammam – Asdaf News:
Celebrated by Muslims around the world, the holy month of Ramadan marks a special period in the Islamic calendar. A period of spiritual reflection, prayer, and self-improvement, fasting from sunrise to sunset is an integral part of Ramadan, making it crucial to maintain healthy habits to ensure overall well-being.
May Al Kaisi, a registered clinical dietician, at Almana Group of Hospitals believes that maintaining a healthy diet during Ramadan is critical in ensuring that the body receives all the necessary nutrients required to sustain optimal energy levels during the fasting period.
Speaking further towards this, Al Kaisi said: “Ramadan presents a wonderful opportunity to reflect on one’s spiritual growth. However, neglecting one’s physical health during long fasting periods can be detrimental to overall well-being. Consuming a balanced diet and staying hydrated, outside fasting hours, has a remarkably positive impact on your overall health. A balanced diet comprises a combination of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. It is also important to factor in some level of physical activity each day.”
Here are some of May’s expert tips for healthy eating during Ramadan, as well as ways to maintain overall health during this period:
Plan Your Meals Ahead of Time
It is important to plan your meals in advance to ensure that you get all the nutrients you need during Ramadan. Start with a balanced iftar meal that includes complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats, to ensure that you get all the essential nutrients.
Stay Hydrated
During Ramadan, it is vital to stay hydrated. Make sure you drink enough water and avoid sugary or carbonated drinks, as these can dehydrate you faster. Drink plenty of water during the non-fasting hours and have a glass of water with your meal to stay hydrated.
Avoid Overeating
It is tempting to overindulge during iftar, but it is important to avoid overeating. Eating too much can lead to digestive issues and make you feel sluggish the following day. Try to eat slowly and stop eating before you feel too full. Preparing a weekly meal plan can help prevent overeating and food waste.
Choose Healthy Foods
Choose healthy foods that are rich in nutrients. These include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. Such foods provide rich sources of the energy you need to sustain your fast and leave you feeling full for longer.
Exercise Regularly
Regular exercise is important for maintaining overall health during Ramadan. Try to incorporate physical activity, such as a 30-minute walk or a light workout, just before iftar into your daily routine. High-intensity workouts can take place after iftar time by 2-3 hours. This will help you maintain your energy levels and stay fit.
Get Enough Sleep
Try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night to help your body recharge and rejuvenate. Your body requires an optimal level of nutrients each day to thrive, by following these tips, you can maintain a healthy lifestyle during Ramadan.
